For Next Week and Vocabulary Update

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen,

So based on recent concerns which were brought to my attention regarding your vocabulary exam and end of year assessment, I have made several modifications to your syllabus.

First and foremost, for next week, we will be continuing to go over pedagogy and modern education, based on the packet and our previous class. We will continue our model of student led class discussions, but with somewhat less frequency, and you will be leading them largely at the end of the semester, the beginning of which we will spend working on vocabulary both within class and outside of class. I will explain more about our modified syllabus when I see you on Wednesday, and give you our new schedule based on your ability to access the vocabulary workbook chapters.

Below is your required vocabulary for the second semester. For now, we will put phrasal verbs and idioms on hold for later in the year when you start your presentations, as many of these are incorporated into the below listed vocabulary.

Here are the vocabulary readings in full, for the rest of our semester. I may modify this but for now, this will be your required exercise for the remainder of the semester. For Wednesday, I would like you to print and complete Vince chapter 6 which we will go over and class, but copy ONLY McCarthy and O’Dell chapter 11-15, we will go over these in class and begin to work on them together, to answer any questions, you will then complete them on your own throughout the week. Here are the full names of the texts, copies of these should be available under Mott Year 1, but if you run into any issues, you may always find them under the other instructor’s name Cullen Year 1, as this section is doing the same vocabulary as we are.

  • Advanced Language Practice (M. Vince) 2009 edition!!! : vocab chapters: 6, 9, 11-13, 18
  • English Vocabulary in Use (advanced) (M. McCarthy and F. O’Dell): chapters 11-21, 24-28, 30-34

Please e-mail me with questions. In other news, I will be having an American Film Club every other week, located in room 105, the first meeting will be Monday March 23rd at 5:15 p.m. and we will be watching the classic American film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and discussing it afterwards. I will provide snacks for the first meeting, but feel free to bring anything you want to eat or snack on. Hope to see you guys there!
